Afghanistan Squad Update for ICC Champions Trophy 2025 – Ghazanfar Out, Kharote In

Afghanistan has made a change to their squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Young right-arm finger spinner AM Ghazanfar has been ruled out due to an L4 vertebra fracture. The injury, which occurred during Afghanistan’s tour of Zimbabwe, will keep him out for at least four months. As a result, he will miss both the Champions Trophy 2025 and the IPL 2025, where he had recently secured a contract with Mumbai Indians.

Ghazanfar’s absence is a setback for Afghanistan, as he had taken 21 wickets in 11 ODIs. His performance showed promise, and his exclusion leaves a gap in the spin department.

Nangeyalia Kharote Replaces Ghazanfar

To replace Ghazanfar, the selectors have called up Nangeyalia Kharote, a 20-year-old left-arm spinner. Kharote was initially named as a reserve but has now been promoted to the main squad. He played in the ODI series against Bangladesh in Sharjah and made a strong impact, taking 3 wickets for 28 runs in the second match.

Since his international debut in March 2024, Kharote has played 7 ODIs and 6 T20Is. His addition strengthens Afghanistan’s spin attack.

Afghanistan’s Strong Spin Bowling

Afghanistan is known for producing quality spinners. Even with Ghazanfar’s absence, their bowling attack remains strong. The squad includes:

  • Rashid Khan – One of the world’s best leg-spinners.
  • Noor Ahmad – A talented left-arm wrist spinner.
  • Mohammad Nabi – An experienced all-rounder.
  • Nangeyalia Kharote – The new addition to the spin unit.

With this lineup, Afghanistan’s spin attack remains a key strength in the tournament.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman Still Unavailable

Afghanistan will also be without Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who has not played for the national team since the 2023 World Cup. Although he participated in the SA20 league, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed that he is still unavailable. His absence limits Afghanistan’s spin options against strong batting teams.
