Sunil Gavaskar has dismissed the notion that India is the clear favourite in their much-anticipated Champions Trophy 2025 clash against Pakistan. The match is set to take place in Dubai on Sunday, February 23.
India’s Strong Record in ICC Events
India holds a 16-4 record against Pakistan in ICC tournaments, including the ODI World Cup, Champions Trophy, and T20 World Cup. This history, combined with India’s strong start, has strengthened their position as the team to beat.

“Anything Can Happen,” Says Gavaskar
While many experts consider India favourites, Gavaskar insists that Pakistan cannot be written off.
“Anything can happen, as one player can change the game. Pakistan has several match-winners. Calling India the outright favourite is incorrect,” Gavaskar told India Today.
Champions Trophy Edge for Pakistan
Despite India’s dominance in ICC tournaments, Pakistan holds a 3-2 advantage over India in Champions Trophy history. Gavaskar believes this could boost Pakistan’s confidence despite their recent defeat.
“India has all-around strength, so they will start as favourites. However, Pakistan is under pressure after losing to New Zealand. This is one tournament where they have an edge, and they want to maintain that,” he added.

Gavaskar also suggested that India could adjust their strategy by adding an extra spinner. He highlighted the potential role of Varun Chakravarthy and the possibility of Hardik Pandya taking the new ball.
“Hardik Pandya can open the bowling against Pakistan. India knows the pitch conditions well. While pacers took wickets, spinners controlled the game against Bangladesh. Adding Varun could be an option,” Gavaskar explained.
