India’s journey to the final of the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy is something fans still remember. Although India lost to Pakistan in the final, the tournament featured some great performances from Indian cricketers. Many of the players from that squad have since retired from international cricket. As the 2025 Champions Trophy draws closer, let’s take a moment to look at six of these players who have retired and reflect on their contributions to Indian cricket.
1. Shikhar Dhawan
Shikhar Dhawan was one of the standout players for India during the 2017 Champions Trophy. He scored a total of 338 runs in five innings, which included two half-centuries. With an average of 67.6 and a strike rate of 101.80, Dhawan played an important role in giving India a strong start in each of their matches. He formed a solid opening partnership with Rohit Sharma, which helped India get off to a good start in most of their matches.
Dhawan retired from international cricket on August 24, 2024, after playing his last ODI against Bangladesh in 2022. Throughout his career, Dhawan was known for his consistency at the top of the order and was a key player for India for many years.
2. MS Dhoni
MS Dhoni is one of the most iconic players in Indian cricket history. He retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020, after a career full of memorable moments. Dhoni’s final match for India was the semi-final of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, where his runout ended India’s chances of making it to the final.
In the 2017 Champions Trophy, Dhoni scored 63 runs in two innings. He had a strike rate of 98.52, and although he didn’t score a big knock in the final, his leadership and calm presence were crucial throughout the tournament. Dhoni’s leadership of India to victory in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 Cricket World Cup made him one of the best leaders in cricket history.
3. Dinesh Karthik
Dinesh Karthik was part of the 2017 Champions Trophy squad, but he didn’t play in any of the matches during the tournament. Even though he wasn’t in the playing XI, Karthik had been an important member of India’s squad in the past, including in the 2013 Champions Trophy where he played a key role in India’s victory.
Karthik retired from international cricket on June 1, 2024, after his last appearance for India in the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup against Bangladesh. While he didn’t get much playing time in the 2017 tournament, his experience and contributions over the years were valuable to the team.
4. Yuvraj Singh
Yuvraj Singh is another legend of Indian cricket who retired from international cricket on June 10, 2019. His last match for India was against the West Indies in 2017 at North Sound. Yuvraj played a vital role in India’s 2017 Champions Trophy campaign, scoring 105 runs in five innings at an average of 35 and a strike rate of 99. His highest score in the tournament was 53 runs, which he scored against Pakistan in the group stage.
Yuvraj was known for his ability to turn the game with both bat and ball. He played a major role in India’s victories in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, making him one of the best all-rounders India has ever produced.
5. Ravichandran Ashwin
Ravichandran Ashwin was India’s second-choice spinner in the 2017 Champions Trophy, behind Ravindra Jadeja. Unfortunately, Ashwin didn’t have a successful tournament, taking just one wicket in three matches. However, he remained a key player for India, especially in Test cricket, where he became one of the best spinners in the world.
Ashwin retired from international cricket on December 18, 2024, following the final Test match against Australia in Brisbane. Though his performance in the Champions Trophy wasn’t great, Ashwin’s skill and consistency in longer formats made him one of India’s most reliable bowlers.
6. Kedar Jadhav
Kedar Jadhav had a short but memorable career in international cricket. He made his debut for India in 2014 and played his last ODI match on February 8, 2020, against New Zealand. In the 2017 Champions Trophy, Jadhav played a small but important role. He scored 26 runs and took three wickets, showcasing his all-round skills.
Jadhav announced his retirement on June 3, 2024. While his career was brief, he made his mark in key moments for India, especially with his ability to contribute both as a batsman and a bowler.
