Ryan Rickelton Prepares for Champions Trophy 2025 with Strong Form

Ryan Rickelton is determined to prove himself across all formats of international cricket. The South African batter has started 2025 on a strong note, delivering impressive performances in both Tests and T20s. Now, he is focused on making a mark in the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy in the ODI format.

Rickelton has displayed remarkable form this year. He began with a brilliant 259-run innings against Pakistan in a Test match at Newlands and continued his momentum in the SA20. His performances helped MI Cape Town secure the trophy, showcasing his ability to dominate in different formats.

Now, he is shifting his focus to ODIs as South Africa aims for success in the Champions Trophy. The 28-year-old has a solid domestic 50-over record and is eager to adapt his game for the international stage. With guidance from South African cricket legend Hashim Amla, Rickelton is working on refining his technique to contribute effectively to the national team.

Training with Hashim Amla

Rickelton has benefited from Amla’s mentorship, particularly in improving his off-side play. Amla, known for his precise shot-making, has been guiding him to expand his game and avoid over-relying on leg-side shots.

“Hashim has been a phenomenal coach for me,” Rickelton said. “He always tells me to open up the off-side more. He gets excited when he sees me play a cover drive.”

These technical adjustments, combined with his recent form, give Rickelton confidence as he prepares for the Champions Trophy.

Battling for a Spot in the ODI Team

Rickelton made his debut with the senior South African squad on a tour to Pakistan in 2021. He now returns with hopes of securing a permanent place in the ODI setup. He recently scored 336 runs at a strike rate of 178.72 in the SA20, making a strong case for his inclusion at the top of the order.

With Quinton de Kock’s retirement from ODIs, there is an opportunity for Rickelton to step up. However, competition is tough, with Tony de Zorzi also in contention to partner captain Temba Bavuma.

“This ODI team has been difficult to break into over the past couple of years,” Rickelton said. “But Quinny retiring has opened a door, and I’m hoping to get a few games.”

South Africa’s Upcoming Matches

South Africa recently finished as runners-up in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and now has another shot at an international trophy in the Champions Trophy. Later in the year, they will also face Australia in the ICC World Test Championship Final at Lord’s, a match Rickelton is already looking forward to.

“To play Australia at Lord’s in a one-off final is something none of us ever thought possible growing up,” he said.

For now, his focus remains on the Champions Trophy. South Africa won the tournament in 1998, when it was called the ICC KnockOut Trophy, and Rickelton hopes to help them achieve another title.

Playing ODI Cricket in Pakistan

Rickelton has played six ODIs so far, earning his place in the squad after finishing as the top run-scorer in South Africa’s domestic 50-over competition in 2022/23. He has a List A average of over 46, with six centuries, making him well-prepared for the format.

He understands the need to adapt to Pakistan’s conditions and is ready for the challenge. “The wickets in Pakistan can be good for batting, but under lights, the ball swings and skids,” he said. “It’s about adjusting from the bouncier wickets in South Africa.”

With his form, experience, and guidance from Amla, Rickelton is ready to take on the Champions Trophy challenge and strengthen his place in South Africa’s ODI squad.
