The ICC Champions Trophy 2025, set to take place in Pakistan, is attracting a lot of attention from cricket fans and experts. One of the biggest voices speaking about the tournament is Shane Watson, a former Australian cricketer and current ICC ambassador. Watson shared his thoughts on what makes the Champions Trophy special and why it is such an important event for world cricket.
The Excitement of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025
A Smaller and More Competitive Format
Shane Watson pointed out that the Champions Trophy stands out because it features just eight top teams. This makes the tournament more exciting and competitive. Each match is crucial, and no team can afford to take it easy. Watson explained that because the competition is so tight, anything can happen, just like when Australia exited early in 2013. This shows how quickly the fortunes of teams can change in such a fast-paced event. The stakes are high, making each game a thrilling experience for players and fans.
Focusing on Quality Cricket
Watson also highlighted how the Champions Trophy is different from the ODI World Cup. While the World Cup includes many teams, the Champions Trophy focuses on the best teams. This means that every match is between top-ranked teams, and the cricket is of the highest quality. Watson believes this is one of the main reasons why the Champions Trophy is so exciting. “The level of competition is the beauty of this tournament,” he said. Teams must perform at their best from the very start, which makes every match a showcase of world-class cricket. Fans can expect to see the best players in the world at their peak.
Pakistan’s Historic Role in Hosting the Tournament
The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will be a special event for Pakistan, as it will be the first time the country hosts this prestigious tournament. Watson expressed his excitement about this historic occasion. He believes that hosting such a major event is a big opportunity for Pakistan and its passionate cricket fans. Having played in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), Watson knows how much the sport means to Pakistani fans. He fondly remembers his time in Pakistan during 2005 and 2019, calling those years some of the best moments in his career. He believes the return of international cricket to Pakistan will bring huge excitement to the country.

One of the biggest topics around the tournament is the fact that India will play its matches in Dubai rather than in Pakistan. This decision has caused mixed reactions, and Watson expressed his disappointment. He explained that India vs. Pakistan matches are among the most exciting in international cricket. The rivalry between the two nations is one of the highlights of the sport, and many fans were hoping to see these games played in Pakistan. Watson believes that hosting these iconic matches on Pakistani soil would have been a historic moment for cricket.
Even though India’s absence is a setback, Watson remains confident that the tournament will still be a huge success. He believes the Champions Trophy will provide plenty of thrilling cricket for fans all around the world.
Impact on Pakistan Cricket
This tournament is incredibly important for Pakistan cricket. For many years, Pakistan has faced challenges in hosting international cricket, and the Champions Trophy offers a rare opportunity for the country to showcase its cricketing talent.
