The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) recently faced social media backlash when a video surfaced showing the Indian flag missing from stadiums in Karachi ahead of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. This raised questions and sparked debates about the PCB’s intentions, particularly regarding India’s absence from the event. However, the PCB has offered a clear explanation to address these concerns.
What Happened with the Indian Flag?
Ahead of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, which Pakistan is hosting for the first time since the 1996 World Cup, a video from Karachi’s National Stadium went viral. It showed flags from the participating nations being displayed, but the Indian flag was noticeably absent. This led to widespread criticism online, with many accusing the PCB of intentionally excluding India’s flag due to political tensions.
The PCB, however, quickly responded to the controversy, clarifying that the flags raised at the stadiums represent the countries playing in Pakistan for the Champions Trophy. “India is not playing in Pakistan, so its flag was not raised at the venues hosting matches in Pakistan,” said a PCB source.
Why Was the Indian Flag Missing?
The PCB source explained that India’s team would not be playing in Pakistan, as it had declined to participate in the tournament due to security concerns and political factors. As a result, the Indian flag was not included in the flag displays at stadiums in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi.
Additionally, Bangladesh’s team had not yet arrived in Pakistan, and their first match would take place in Dubai, not Pakistan. As a result, the flags of these countries were not displayed either. The PCB clarified that only the flags of teams playing in Pakistan were raised at the stadiums.
PCB Responds to Controversy
The PCB downplayed the controversy, insisting that the issue was sparked by a social media video designed to create tension. “There is no need for an official statement,” the PCB source added. “This controversy is based on false information, and its aim is to damage Pakistan’s image.”
The board stressed that the flag displays were meant to welcome the teams participating in the Champions Trophy in Pakistan. Each venue was decorated with the flags of the nations playing at those locations.
Displaying Unity Amid Controversy
Despite the missing flags, the PCB emphasized that the host cities—Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi—had banners and billboards along major streets featuring the captains of all the participating countries, including India. This was a clear gesture of hospitality, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to making the Champions Trophy a success.
The PCB further clarified that the political rivalry between India and Pakistan would not interfere with the organization of the event. While India’s team will play its matches in Dubai, Pakistan is focused on hosting a well-organized and inclusive tournament.
