Why Morne Morkel Left India’s Coaching Staff Amid Champions Trophy 2025

Morne Morkel’s Sudden Exit from the Indian Team

Morne Morkel, India’s bowling coach, has left for South Africa after the passing of his father, Albert Morkel. The news reached him while he was with the team, and he immediately returned home to be with his family.

Impact on the Indian Team

Morkel’s departure comes at a critical time for India, as the team is already missing key pacer Jasprit Bumrah. His coaching expertise was expected to strengthen the bowling attack, but now the team will have to adjust without him.

Morkel’s Bond with His Father

Morkel shared a strong relationship with his father. In a past interview with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), he mentioned that the first person he called after getting the India coaching job was his father. He reflected on that moment, saying,
“I sat for about five minutes thinking about it, and then I first phoned my dad. I didn’t even call my wife. Normally, they say to call your wife first, but for me, speaking with my dad was most important.”

India’s Champions Trophy 2025 Campaign Continues

The Indian team remains in Dubai for the Champions Trophy 2025, where they will compete against Bangladesh, Pakistan, and New Zealand in the group stage. Their first match is set for February 20 against Bangladesh.
